The works included six levels of building over an existing two-storey library. The new building provides a significant extension to student facilities, increasing the capacity of the Boarding House and the Junior School.

Our construction approach used bored pier, ground beam, pad and strip footing foundations with an in-situ reinforced concrete frame and post-tensioned floor slabs. Suspended links to adjacent buildings were included in the scope. We also undertook hydraulic, electrical, dry fire, security/CCTV, mechanical and lift works through the course of the project.

Somerville House’s CBD-fringe location sits in a busy area between a hospital and another education facility, so the safety of students and the public was a major focus for our project team. The team successfully coordinated the works to minimise disruption and managed street traffic so that the adjacent major hospital was not obstructed.

The finished building blends a classic character with modern finishes and appointments. It also employs natural brightness as a key design theme – with extensive sunscreens, awnings and other elements bringing plenty of light into the space and enhancing its features.
