The construction of the Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) building and the Complex And RestorativE (CARE) Service building occurred simultaneously. Additional work involving internal demolition and refurbishment of A-block East, as well as external landscaping. During the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase, BADGE played an essential role in the design coordination. Ensuring that the project met tight deadlines due to electoral commitments by the Labour government, addressing state ramping issues.
To accommodate new infrastructure without altering the heritage façade, structural reinforcements, including a new roof, concrete slabs, and support columns, were incorporated. The integration of the modern structural elements posed significant challenges, particularly regarding the preservation of the heritage elements, such as the façade and the tiled roof.
Additionally, since the Repat Health Precinct remained an operational healthcare and aged care facility throughout the project, safety and logistical considerations were paramount. Construction activities had to be coordinated to ensure that hospital staff could safely transport patients between the GEM and CARE buildings via a shared pathway until the CARE building was officially handed over. This seamless integration of construction and healthcare operations highlights the project’s complexity and our commitment to maintaining high safety standards.
